Kenyan sprinter Ferdinand Omanyala has finally addressed the speculation surrounding his absence from a proposed race against popular American streamer, IShowSpeed, during the YouTuber’s recent tour of Nairobi. The viral moment, which had fans eagerly awaiting a showdown between the two, sparked a buzz on social media when IShowSpeed hinted at the possibility of challenging Omanyala to a race during his visit. However, despite the excitement, Omanyala was notably absent from the event.
In a recent statement, Omanyala revealed the reasons behind his decision not to take part in the much-anticipated race. According to the Olympic finalist, the timing was simply not right due to his strict training schedule. As one of the fastest men on the planet, Omanyala explained that participating in a casual race, especially with the level of preparation required for his professional commitments, would have been a distraction.
"I have a specific training regimen that I adhere to, and racing for fun or for social media engagement would compromise my focus on upcoming competitions. My goal is always to represent Kenya and perform at the highest level, and that’s my primary focus right now," said Omanyala.
Omanyala also acknowledged IShowSpeed's influence and online popularity, but emphasized that professional athletes have to make decisions based on their long-term goals rather than spur-of-the-moment opportunities. While he expressed respect for the American streamer, the 27-year-old sprinter made it clear that he was not in a position to take part in such an event, especially as he prepares for major international meets.
The excitement around the race was initially sparked when IShowSpeed, known for his energetic and often unpredictable content, mentioned the idea during a live stream while he was in Nairobi. Speed's fans immediately took to social media, urging both the YouTuber and Omanyala to make the race a reality.
However, the proposed race between the two did not come to fruition, much to the disappointment of many fans. IShowSpeed himself later posted a video, humorously addressing the situation, stating that he would still love to race Omanyala “one day.”
Omanyala's decision is one that reflects the discipline required to maintain a career at the highest level of athletics. As one of Africa’s most prominent sprinters, Omanyala has set his sights on achieving more accolades in international competitions. The race against IShowSpeed, while appealing to fans, would have been a departure from the commitment and focus necessary to stay at the top of his game.
Fans, however, continue to express support for both figures, with many hoping that they might find time for a friendly race in the future when schedules allow.
While the race may have been a no-go this time around, Omanyala’s stance reminds everyone that for world-class athletes, success on the track is not something left to chance.
