In one of the most astonishing wildlife moments ever captured on film, BBC wildlife filmmakers documented dolphins engaging in a behaviour that appears almost unbelievable—the careful use of pufferfish toxin in what some scientists believe may be a form of recreational intoxication.
The footage shows young dolphins deliberately seeking out pufferfish and handling them with extraordinary precision. Rather than attacking them as prey, the dolphins gently chew on the fish, seemingly releasing small, controlled doses of tetrodotoxin, one of the most powerful neurotoxins known in nature. They then pass the pufferfish from one dolphin to another, in a manner that strikingly resembles social sharing.
What makes the behaviour even more compelling is the contrast with normal hunting habits. Dolphins typically tear apart their prey in seconds, yet in this case, the interaction lasts 20 to 30 minutes, suggesting something far more deliberate than feeding. The entire encounter resembles a ritual rather than a meal.
Afterwards, the dolphins were observed floating just beneath the ocean’s surface, moving slowly and calmly. Some appeared mesmerised by their own reflections, displaying behaviour marine scientists describe as trance-like. This unusual state has fueled speculation that the dolphins were experiencing the neurological effects of the toxin.
Tetrodotoxin is extremely dangerous—approximately 1,200 times more lethal than cyanide. In humans, even minute amounts can cause paralysis or death. Yet dolphins appear to possess an instinctive understanding of how much exposure they can tolerate, avoiding lethal doses while still experiencing noticeable effects.
Not all researchers agree on the interpretation. Some caution that the behaviour may simply be playful curiosity or a form of social learning rather than intentional intoxication. Dolphins are well known for their intelligence, playfulness, and tendency to experiment with objects in their environment.
Others, however, suggest this could represent one of the first documented examples of recreational drug use in the animal kingdom. If that interpretation holds, it adds another remarkable layer to what we already know about dolphins—their advanced intelligence, emotional depth, and complex social bonds.
Whether playful experimentation or conscious exploration of altered states, the behaviour blurs the line between human and animal experience.
